“I thought you were all human like me,” I eventually managed to blurt out.
“There are no humans left in the world, Mila,” Calix said. “All of the humans are dead.”
“Dead?” I said. “What do you mean dead? I’m human and so are the people where I come from…”
“How many people did you pass on the road when you travelled from Maze to Shade?” Rush asked. “How many other cars or trucks did you pass?”
“None,” I said, trying to remember. It seemed like another lifetime ago now – like that had all taken place in some other world.
“There are only werewolves and vampires living in the world,” Trent said, stepping forward and standing shoulder to shoulder with Rea. Both of them looked at me. They all did.
“So if there aren’t any humans left in the world, what happened to all of them?” I scoffed. Did they think I was some kind of idiot?
“We killed the humans,” Rea said. “The Beautiful Immortals wiped them from the face of the Earth. There are no more humans alive.”
“And you really expect me to believe this?” I said, unable to comprehend what they were telling me. “I’m human – the people of Maze are human.” And even as I said those words, I saw those words written in Annabel’s schoolbook. No humans, it had read. It was the last thing she had said to me before being snatched into the woods and having her throat ripped out by a vampire.
“Morten, bring the prisoner,” Rea said, not taking her eyes off me for one moment.
A gap appeared in the circle of werewolves that surrounded me to let Morten through. Just like the others, he too now looked half-man and half-wolf. His eyes were still milky white, and he continued to walk with a stoop. But his hands and face were covered in long stringy white hair. His face was long and pointed into something close to a snout. Morten pushed and shoved the hooded vampire into the circle.
“Just werewolves and vampires,” Rea said as Morten threw back the prisoner’s hood.
Unable to breathe, I dropped to my knees and threw my hands to my face. If I covered my eyes and looked through my fingers at the vampire then it might not be him. It might just all be some nightmare that I was unable to wake from. It was the vampire that had tied me to that pole. He looked beautiful like he had in the woods. But there was something now very familiar about the vampire. And as he retook his human-looking form, I recognised him fully.
Flint looked back at me and I looked at him.
“Tell me it’s not true,” I begged him. “Tell me you’re not…”
“I am a vampire,” Flint said.
I covered my ears and rocked forward on my knees. I didn’t want to hear what he had to say.
“I’m so sorry, Mila,” he whispered, his chains clanking and rattling together as he shuffled forward. Morten yanked him backward again before Flint had reached me.
“And my uncle?” I dared to ask, my heart feeling as if it had been ripped to pieces.
“Yes, he is like me,” Flint said. “He is a vampire.”
Staring up at him through my tears, I said, “So was I the only human in Maze?”
“You’re not human, Mila,” Flint said. “The wolf is right. There are no humans left. They are all dead. Between us we killed them all. They all perished in the Beautiful Immortals’ war.”
“So if I’m not human, what am I?” I cried, not wanting to be either vampire or werewolf.
Rea stepped forward and placing one hand gently on my bowed head, she whispered, “Mila, you are Julia Miller’s daughter – you’re a witch.”
